This is Celia C. Tillman bringing you greetings and encouragement from the Honey-Comb of Praises. Our lesson for this month is MARRIAGE GOD’S WAY.

Marriage is the oldest institution that was created and ordained by God. However, the book of Genesis is a book of beginnings, whose author was God Almighty. He completed his work in six days and rested on the seventh day, (Genesis 2:2); “the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and man became a living soul,” (Genesis 2:7). However, after God had made man, there was not found a “help meet” for him, (Genesis 2:20), and “God caused a deep sleep to fall upon Adam and he slept: and he took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh,” (Genesis 2:21). However, with the rib that God had taken from the man, God made woman and brought her to the man, Genesis 2:22). Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man,” (Genesis 2:23).

God is all knowing and he created marriage between one man and one woman to last a lifetime. The Bible teaches, “Therefore, shall a man leave his father and mother and cleave, meaning, he must come closely attached to his wife: and they should be as one flesh. What God therefore join together let no man put asunder,” (Genesis 2:24; Matthews 19:5-6). The bond of marriage should be so strong that neither the wife nor the husband will allow anything or anybody to sever their relationship. They should be perfectly joined together in the same mind as it relates to God’s precepts (laws and principles; rules).

God blesses the union of marriage and it is so sacred to him that he compares it to the church which is his bride, (Revelation 21:9; Rev.19:7and Col. 1:18,24). Marriage is more than a casual relationship, and marriage is not founded upon passing infatuation, nor is on how much money a person has. The vows that one has taken at the marriage ceremony is very unique and the couple agree to stand by each other in bad times, as well as good times, which is reflected in the traditional wedding vows:”for richer, for poorer, for better or worse, sickness in health, to love and cherish, until death us do part.” The married couple should be “self-less,” not thinking of self but being unselfish, and having the ability to see beyond their own personal concern, (I Corinthians 13:1-13).

God said, “Marriage is honorable in all and the bed undefiled: whoremongers and adulterers God will judge,”(Hebrew 13:4). However, both should render due benevolence to each other (Sexually), (I Corinthians 7:3)”. If you are to abstain from each other let it be with consent, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; come back together again,” (I Corinthians 7:5). However, Satan will not have control over you.

Marriage is a commitment for life, and it is the best that the two can bring out in each other. The two functions as one because together they can accomplish many things, as to being separate and apart. However, neither is superior nor inferior to the other but the two are complementary to each other (complete each other and work together well).

Marriage offers opportunities for sharing and developing unity; oneness in the spirit of love. However, there are times in a marriage where difficulties may arise, but if it is built upon a solid foundation, the two which have become “one” can conquer “all things” through Christ which strengthen them, (Philippians 4:13).

In God’s design of a true marriage, the husband and wife are friends, confidant, lovers, teacher, listener and critic. However, there may come a time, when one mate may be heartbroken or disturbed, and the love of the other may be so tender, caring and affectionate. God’s pattern for marriage is the best to adhere or follow, and since man can’t direct his own steps, (Jeremiah 10:23; Psalm 37:23). It is wise to depend upon God to guide or direct them. The married couple should always seek wise counsel which is the word of God, and others who are spiritual minded. The Bible teaches that “wisdom is the principal thing, therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding, (Proverb 4:7).

A perfect example is our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who increase as a child in wisdom; statue and favor with his Father God, and man, (Luke 2:52). Also the couple should learn the privilege in the power of prayer, and grow in understanding of what God can mean in their lives. However, the married couple must continue to study God’s word, learn the principles; apply them in their hearts, to be able to have a successful marriage.
